Water Safety Awareness Campaign in Hood River Leads to Safer Summer on the Water

As summer heats up and more people head to the water for fun and relaxation, it’s important to remember the importance of water safety. Fiona Wylde, the founder of Wild, Wind & Water, is leading the charge in educating students and community members about staying safe on the water.

Teaming up with Hood River County Deputy Marine Sheriff Joel Carmody, Wylde visited local schools to teach students about the dangers of cold water, strong currents, and the importance of wearing a life jacket. With 1,460 students trying on life jackets and learning how to properly fit them, the impact of their efforts is clear.

But the education doesn’t stop there. Wylde and her team also worked with The Dalles Migrant Education Summer School, as well as visiting the Hood River Historical Museum to learn about riparian ecology. Their commitment to spreading water safety awareness throughout the community is truly commendable.

In addition to their educational efforts, Wild, Wind & Water is also offering free community stand up paddleboard opportunities every Saturday morning, as well as free Wing Foiling introductions every Thursday evening. Their dedication to providing access to water sports for people of all ages and abilities is inspiring.

So, as you head out to enjoy the water this summer, remember the lessons taught by Wylde and Carmody. Wear your life jacket, be aware of your surroundings, and most importantly, have fun safely. And if you’re in the Hood River area, be sure to check out Wild, Wind & Water for all your water sports needs. Stay safe and have a great summer on the water!
